The importance of protecting historical heritage

Palazzo d’Orleans, in Palermo, is an 18th century building that houses the government of the Sicilian region and is currently undergoing restoration.

One of the main problems that are usually found when restoring historic buildings is that of humidity, either because they do not have the appropriate waterproofing systems to prevent it or because said systems have become obsolete. Rainwater leaks, for example, pose a risk to the stability of the building, since the water penetrates into the structure affecting it. This phenomenon can even cause the building to fall. For this reason, it is necessary to act as soon as possible, analyse the damage caused by humidity and consider possible solutions. In this case, the best solution was to install a waterproofing system on the different surfaces of the building.

For the restoration of the Palazzo d’Orleans, it has been decided to install the DRY120 waterproofing system. The DRY120 sheet membrane guarantees the safe waterproofing of terraces, roofs, balconies, patios, windowsills, and roofs that allow foot traffic. This membrane has been designed to drain the humidity that is generated on the substrates. The geotextile material on its rear surface allows air to circulate between the substrate and the sheet, eliminating water vapor molecules, avoiding the appearance of bubbles and keeping the supporting surface dry. It also allows its installation on surfaces with residual humidity of up to 5%. This ensures a 100% effective and safe waterproofing, extending the life of the building.
